Best smartwatches for running: GPS, battery and training tools
OutdoorGearLab measured 40 hours of GPS on the Coros Pace 4, and DC Rainmaker called the Forerunner 970's land GPS industry-leading. I'd pick between those two and skip the rest unless you need a phone watch.

Best for serious runners
Garmin Forerunner 970
DC Rainmaker called its land GPS industry-leading, and Garmin rates GPS at up to 26 hours. The catch is battery: DC Rainmaker saw about 2.5 days with the always-on display at Garmin's default brightness.

Coros Pace 4
OutdoorGearLab measured 40 hours of GPS and scored accuracy 9.0 out of 10. It has mineral glass and breadcrumb navigation only, not full maps.

Garmin Venu 4 45mm
Android Authority found multi-band routes tight under tree cover and averaged 9 to 10 days of battery. It has no onboard maps.

Apple Watch Series 12
Apple lists single-band Precision L1 GPS and up to 10 hours of workout tracking. Macworld's two battery runs in everyday use came in at 51 and 40 hours.

For running, I care about two things before any app: does the track match the road, and does the battery survive a long weekend. Everything else is shopping.
I haven't run with any of these. The ranking comes from the reviews named below, all checked Nov 1, 2026.
Garmin Forerunner 970 first
It's $749.99 and weighs 56 g. DC Rainmaker found trail, road and interval runs near-perfect or spot-on. Garmin's manual lists up to 21 hours of multi-band GPS.
The annoying part is brightness. The watch ships with a gesture-based display at two-thirds brightness. DC Rainmaker switched to always-on and got about 2.5 days, then dropped brightness to one-third and said battery went back to Forerunner 965 levels. Do that and it's the best watch here. My full review goes deeper.
Coros Pace 4
$249 for a 32 g watch. I think that is the best deal on the page. OutdoorGearLab's measured 40 hours of GPS in All Systems mode is more than the Garmin's rated 21 to 26, and it scored the track accuracy 9.0 out of 10 (2.02 miles recorded on a 2-mile course).
OutdoorGearLab also lists what's missing: no topographic maps, no speaker, mineral glass instead of sapphire. Its overall score of 74 ranked 12th of 13 watches, mostly on features and battery category scores. It's a narrow watch priced to match. If you want the pair side by side, read Forerunner 970 vs Coros Pace 4.
Garmin Venu 4
At $549.99 it sits between the two. Android Authority said multi-band routes looked "impressively tight" under thick tree cover, and that heart rate stayed within a few beats of a Polar H10 strap. It averaged 9 to 10 days of battery with workouts and sleep tracking.
The limits: no onboard maps, and Android Authority says competitive runners may still prefer a Forerunner for physical buttons and mapping. I'd choose it for someone who wants a nicer everyday watch and runs three times a week.
Apple Watch Series 12 for iPhone owners
It starts at $399. Apple's spec page lists "Precision L1 GPS" and doesn't mention dual-frequency, while the Garmins above use multi-band. Apple claims up to 10 hours of workout tracking.
Macworld's own battery runs gave 51 hours and 40 hours. Those are everyday-use runs, not workout hours, and the review didn't test GPS accuracy. It works only with an iPhone 11 or later, per Apple. I'd buy it as a phone watch that tracks runs, not as a training tool.
Amazfit Balance 2
TechRadar lists dual-band GPS and calls the GPS "solid and reliable." Amazfit rates battery at 21 days of typical use. TechRadar got that with occasional workouts, and about a week once it turned on always-on and heavy GPS. It adds that the Balance 2 isn't as mature as the Garmin Venu 4, and that people who want advanced training analysis and structured workouts should look at the Garmin.
It costs price unconfirmed. I'd leave it for easy-pace runners; I couldn't find a GPS accuracy test I could read for it.
