Garmin Forerunner 970 review: GPS accuracy and battery for runners

DC Rainmaker got about 2.5 days after switching on the always-on display at default brightness, then roughly doubled it by turning the screen down. iRunFar calls it Garmin's most complete running watch, and I still balk at the price.

The Forerunner 970 is $749.99. Android Authority puts that about 50% above the $599 Forerunner 955 Solar from two generations back, and its reviewer says he's "struggling" with the jump. So am I.

I haven't worn this watch. What follows is Garmin's own documentation plus three reviewers, all checked on Nov 1, 2026.

The battery number depends on one setting

Garmin's manual rates smartwatch mode at up to 15 days. In GPS, it lists up to 26 hours in GPS-only mode and up to 21 hours with all systems plus multi-band.

DC Rainmaker's June 2025 review found the catch. The watch ships with a gesture-based display that switches off when you lower your wrist. He prefers always-on, switched it on, left brightness at the default two-thirds, and got about 2.5 days. Garmin's other 45 to 47 mm watches, which he assumes have 1,000-nit screens, usually give him 4 to 6 days that way. He says the one-third brightness setting roughly doubles battery life, back to Forerunner 965 levels, and that it's a 5-second fix. Android Authority's reviewer charged "a little more than once every 10 or 12 days." iRunFar, after four months, charged every eight to nine days.

My read: reviewers charged every 8 to 12 days, so expect roughly that if you set the brightness yourself. I'd say Garmin's default brightness costs more battery than it should, which is also DC Rainmaker's complaint.

GPS is the reason to buy it

DC Rainmaker found trail runs, road runs and 400 m repeats near-perfect or spot-on, and calls its land GPS industry-leading. Android Authority called an 18-mile track "spot-on." iRunFar describes the multiband system as "extremely accurate and fast to find a signal."

Water is the soft spot. DC Rainmaker says open-water swims were weaker, with the watch struggling to reacquire signal after treading water. Garmin's manual lists the water rating as 5 ATM, so that's the number I'd go by.

What you get over the 965

Garmin's own comparison page lists a sapphire lens, "the brightest Garmin AMOLED display yet," and 21 hours of multi-band GPS, up from 19. New features include a built-in flashlight, an ECG app, skin temperature tracking and Triathlon Coach.

The watch has a 47 mm case and weighs 56 g. The case is fiber-reinforced polymer, and iRunFar's reviewer says the display survived drops and dings.

The catches

Running Economy and Step Speed Loss need Garmin's $169 HRM-600 strap, and DC Rainmaker calls them "the two least useful new features on the entire watch." He also hit a round-trip rerouting failure that Garmin confirmed can happen, and the watch crashed repeatedly while he photographed its speaker and microphone features, though he hadn't seen crashes there in the month before. Those were launch-era problems from mid-2025. I can't tell you what firmware fixed.

iPhone owners can't reply to messages from the watch, per DC Rainmaker. Android Authority lists the proprietary charger as a con.

Who should pay

Cheaper options exist. OutdoorGearLab measured 40 hours of GPS battery in All Systems mode on the Coros Pace 4, which costs $249 against $749.99 here. OutdoorGearLab scored the Coros 74 overall and describes mineral glass. Its navigation has also changed since that review: Tom's Guide reported on Sep 4, 2026 that a free software update added downloadable offline maps with turn-by-turn directions to the Pace 4. Tom's Guide notes the watch's 4GB of storage limits how many maps fit, and the update required joining the public beta of the Coros app.

I'd buy the 970 if you run most days, race, and want maps and training load on your wrist. For everyone else the Coros does the core job.
