Best phones for photos in 2026: zoom, low light and ease of use

Three phones here have a 5x telephoto and two have a 4x. I'd start with the Pixel 11 Pro, and I'd ignore the 200 MP number on the Samsung.

If you buy through a link here, the store pays me a small commission. Your price stays exactly the same. How that works.

  1. Best for zoom and size

    Google Pixel 11 Pro

A 5x telephoto in a 6.3-inch body, and the one I'd pick first. The catch is a smaller 4,850 mAh battery and 30 W charging.

  2. Best for iPhone users

    Apple iPhone 18 Pro

A 4x periscope telephoto on the Pro. GSMArena's verdict calls the 211 g body somewhat heavy.

  3. Best for two zoom lenses

    Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra

3x and 5x telephotos on a 6.9-inch screen. GSMArena says the camera hardware lags the top Android camera phones.

  4. Best for battery and zoom

    Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max

Same 4x telephoto as the Pro on a 5,567 mAh cell, and 249 g to carry. It costs $100 more than the Pro.

  5. Best for a lower price

    Google Pixel 11

A 5x telephoto without the Pro price. GSMArena says it isn't sharp beyond 5x.

    $899, checked November 1, 2026

Start with zoom. Most phones shoot a fine photo of a plate of food in decent light. Where they split is a stage, a kid across a field, or a building 30 meters away, and that's a telephoto lens question.

By that test, the Pixel 11 Pro leads. Google fits a 5x telephoto into a 6.3 in body, and the phone weighs 204 g. It's $1,099 at Google's US store (checked Nov 1, 2026).

How I ranked these

I haven't shot with any of them. The ranking comes from GSMArena's reviews and spec pages, plus a simple camera tier I assign from the hardware. Tier 3 is the top of this group. The Pixel 11 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra all get a 3, and the Pixel 11 gets a 2. Treat the tiers as my opinion.

The megapixel trap

The Galaxy S26 Ultra has a 200 MP main camera. The Pixel 11 Pro has 50 MP, and the iPhone 18 Pro has 48 MP. Samsung's number is four times larger, and GSMArena still says its camera hardware drags behind the top Android camera phones. So no, the bigger number didn't win.

What Samsung does give you is a second telephoto. The S26 Ultra has 3x and 5x lenses, and it scored 16 h 23 min in GSMArena's active-use test. That's the best case for it. At $1,399.99 on samsung.com, it costs more than the $1,299 Pro Max, and I'd want the S Pen or the second telephoto to justify that.

The iPhones

The iPhone 18 Pro has a 4x periscope telephoto, which is a step short of the Pixel's 5x. It costs $1,199 at Apple for 256GB. GSMArena measured 16 h 43 min of active use and calls it somewhat heavy at 211 g.

The Pro Max is $1,299. That's $100 more, and you get a 5,567 mAh cell and a 6.9 in screen. GSMArena's endurance test gave it 19 h 20 min. If you shoot a lot of video on one charge, that's what the extra money buys. I wouldn't pay it for the camera alone, since the lenses match the Pro.

If you've never owned an iPhone and don't care about iMessage, the Pixel 11 Pro is the cheaper way to the same camera tier.

The cheaper way in

The Pixel 11 is $899 with a 5x telephoto, 7 years of updates and a camera tier of 2. GSMArena says the telephoto isn't sharp beyond 5x. Google's store page also showed a $200 promo through 11/08 (checked Nov 1, 2026). At that price I'd take it over any phone above it, unless low-light shots matter most.

I haven't found a reliable low-light comparison for all five, so I won't rank on it. Read the GSMArena camera pages before you buy.

What I'd do

Buy the Pixel 11 Pro if you want zoom in a compact body. Buy the iPhone 18 Pro if your family lives in iMessage. Pick the Ultra only if you want the S Pen or two telephotos, because it costs the most of the five.

More on how to read camera specs in why megapixels do not decide phone camera quality. Head to head: iPhone 18 Pro vs Pixel 11 Pro and Galaxy S26 Ultra vs iPhone 18 Pro Max. All phones sit in the phone catalog.
