Samsung Galaxy S26 review: the compact flagship, best bought on sale

GSMArena measured 15:20 hours of active use from a 4,300 mAh cell, but calls the S26 a very minor upgrade with slow charging. I'd buy it on sale and skip it if you own an S25.

If you own a Galaxy S25, stop here. GSMArena's verdict lists "very minor upgrade over the Galaxy S25 overall" as its first complaint, and I agree with the logic. Everyone else has a more interesting question: is the smallest Galaxy worth buying?

I'm working from GSMArena's published tests and Samsung's store page. The 7.3 is my opinion, not a lab score.

What it costs today

Prices checked November 1, 2026.

Samsung's own store page showed $849.99 for the 256GB model on November 1, 2026, marked down from list. The list price in my data is $999.99. The 512GB version showed $1,049.99 on the same page, so the storage step is $200. I couldn't see when the sale ends, so don't assume it stays.

GSMArena quoted $900 for 12GB/256GB in its review. At the sale price, the S26 sits under the iPhone 17 at $929. At list it doesn't.

Battery and charging

The cell is 4,300 mAh, up from 4,000 mAh last year. GSMArena's active-use score was 15:20 hours, which it calls significantly higher than the S25. It also says the S26 trails the Xiaomi 17 and vivo X300, which have bigger batteries, and beats the Pixel 10 Pro.

Charging is the weak spot. Wired is 25 W. GSMArena measured 34% after 15 minutes, 62% after 30, and a full charge in 1:04 hours. The S25 needed 1:17. Better, still slow. GSMArena says charging lags many competitors, even the other S26 models.

Wireless is Qi2, but there are no magnets in the phone. You need a magnetic case to get full Qi2 speed, per GSMArena.

Screen

A 6.3-inch LTPO AMOLED at 1080x2340. GSMArena measured 1,383 nits in auto mode with a 75% white patch and 2,552 nits at peak on a 10% patch. The minimum is 0.9 nits, which is fine for bed. Refresh runs 120Hz in Adaptive mode and drops to 1Hz when idle.

The complaint list is real, though. GSMArena notes the display lacks 10-bit depth, high-frequency PWM and Dolby Vision. If you're flicker-sensitive, read OLED or LCD for your eyes before buying. The review gives no measured PWM figure, so I can't tell you the number.

Performance

Outside the US, China and Japan the S26 uses the Exynos 2600. The US model has the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (US). GSMArena's benchmark unit was the Exynos, so I can't read those numbers across to a US phone. On that unit Geekbench 6 gave 2995 single-core and 10824 multi-core, and the reviewer said it "barely performed at the level of last year's crop of chips." In its stress tests it lost about 40% of CPU and over 50% of GPU performance under sustained load.

Nothing I've read suggests everyday use will feel slow. Long gaming sessions are the thing to avoid.

Camera and the rest

The main camera is 50 MP. A 10 MP 3x telephoto and a 12 MP ultrawide join it. GSMArena likes the autofocus selfie camera and the video tools, LUTs and Horizon Lock among them. Night mode it finds unintuitive. And GSMArena notes the S26 has no 4K120 video option.

It weighs 167 g against 177 g for the iPhone 17. That's 10 g, and you'll feel it in a pocket. Water protection is IP68, which GSMArena points out is below the IP69 on some Android phones. Updates run 7 years.

Who should buy it

GSMArena's closing line is that better-value phones exist at this price, and the S26 is mainly for "a die-hard fan of Samsung's otherwise excellent One UI." I'd soften that a little. At Samsung's $849.99 sale price for 256GB, seven years of updates and a 3x zoom in 167 g, it's a good small Android phone. At list, I'd look elsewhere.
