Galaxy S26 vs iPhone 17: the two standard flagships side by side

GSMArena measured 15 h 20 min of active use on the Galaxy S26 and about 15 hours on the iPhone 17. The S26 has a 3x telephoto and seven update years. GSMArena's iPhone verdict is the warmer one.

Amber marks my pick for that row.

These phones are close enough that I'd stop comparing and look at what each one lacks. The Galaxy S26 lacks a convincing reason to exist next to the S25. The iPhone 17 lacks a telephoto lens.

What it costs

Prices below were checked November 1, 2026.

Samsung's list price for the 256GB S26 is $999.99, and its page showed $849.99 on Nov 1, 2026, marked down from that. Apple sells the 256GB iPhone 17 at $929 unlocked, or from $899 with a carrier connectivity deal (Apple's page, same date).

So at list the iPhone is cheaper, and at Samsung's sale price the S26 is. I couldn't see when Samsung's sale ends, so check the price before you buy.

Battery and charging

The S26 has 4,300 mAh to the iPhone's 3,692 mAh. GSMArena's active-use scores: 15 h 20 min (GSMArena active-use score) for the S26 and 14 h 59 min (GSMArena active-use score) for the iPhone. That's a gap of about 20 minutes, which is nothing.

The S26 test unit used Samsung's Exynos 2600. US buyers get the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, so the battery number is a close guide, not an exact one.

Charging surprised me. The S26 is capped at 25 W and still went from empty to full in 1 h 04 min in GSMArena's test, with 62% after 30 minutes. The iPhone took about 1 h 14 min on Apple's 40W adapter, or 1 h 25 min on a Google charger, and reached 63% in 30 minutes on that Google charger. Wattage on the box isn't the whole story.

Screens

Both are 6.3 inches. GSMArena measured the S26 at 2,552 nits on a 10% white patch and 1,383 nits in auto mode at 75%. The iPhone peaked above 1,700 nits at 75% but held it for about two seconds before settling near 1,012. For direct sunlight, the S26's numbers look better.

GSMArena's S26 cons include a display without high-frequency PWM or 10-bit depth. If flicker bothers you, my OLED or LCD explainer covers what to check.

Cameras

Only the S26 has a telephoto: 10 MP at 3x. GSMArena calls its results okay, with pleasing colors, and soft and noisy at night in Auto mode. The main camera is great in daylight and soft in low light. The ultrawide has no autofocus.

GSMArena says the iPhone lacks a dedicated telephoto and calls it the more competent video tool, with a 48 MP ultrawide that has autofocus for macro. Its verdict on the S26 against the iPhone 17 Pro was that the Samsung is "a bit behind" on camera quality. That was a different iPhone than this one, so I'd read it as a hint, not a result.

Speed, heat, and years

I didn't find a benchmark that puts the S26 against the iPhone 17's A19. What GSMArena does say: the iPhone loses a big chunk of performance to thermal throttling, with no vapor chamber and a hot back. The S26 unit lost about 40% in its CPU stress test and more than 50% in the GPU one. Neither is a good long-session gaming phone.

On support, Samsung promises 7 years. Apple hasn't given a number I could find, and I use 5 years as my own planning figure. See my explainer on how many update years a phone should get.

My pick

GSMArena's S26 verdict is cool: "There are better value smartphones out there at the same price point." Its iPhone 17 verdict calls it "by far the easiest iPhone to recommend in the 2025 lineup."

  • iPhone user, no zoom need: the iPhone 17.
  • Android user who zooms: the S26, once it's near the Samsung sale price or lower.
  • Magnet accessories on your list: read Qi2 and MagSafe explained first.

Full specs sit on the Galaxy S26 and iPhone 17 pages. My S26 review has the longer take.
