iPhone 17 review: the sensible iPhone, with no zoom lens

GSMArena measured about 15 hours of active use from a 177 g iPhone 17, and I think that's the right iPhone for most people at $929 list. Just don't buy it for zoom.

Apple left the telephoto off, and nothing else on this page matters if you take a lot of zoomed-in photos (checked Nov 1, 2026). The iPhone 17 has a 2x digital crop and that's it. Buy something else.

Still here? Then it's probably the iPhone I'd pick for you. Everything measured below comes from GSMArena, and the 7.9 is my opinion based on those results (checked Nov 1, 2026).

The two prices

Apple quotes this phone two ways. As of November 1, 2026, the 256GB model has a list price of $929 with no carrier attached, and "from $899" with carrier activation. So the $899 you'll see in ads comes with a condition, and I'd budget for $929.

I couldn't confirm a street price at any retailer. GSMArena says the launch price was unchanged from the prior model, for what that's worth 14 months on.

Where the money went

A screen that finally matches

ProMotion at 120 Hz has reached the base model, on a 6.3-inch LTPO panel. GSMArena's brightness numbers are more mixed. In its test, manual tops out at 824 nits. Auto mode sustained about 1,000 for GSMArena, and the 1,700-plus burst held for about 2 seconds. Apple's 3,000-nit peak figure doesn't tell you any of that, so I'd ignore it.

A battery that beats its size

GSMArena's Active Use Score came in at about 15 hours from a 3,692 mAh cell. That's the efficient A19 at work. Pixel 11 has 4,985 mAh and scored only 15.67 hours in the same test, so Apple gets nearly the same result from about 26% less battery.

Charging that's merely fine

GSMArena timed a full charge at 1 h 25 min on Google's charger, with about 63% at 30 minutes, and about 1 h 14 min on Apple's new adapter. Apple claims 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter, which you'll have to buy if you don't own one that fast. MagSafe and Qi2 run at 25W.

The camera, with a warning

GSMArena rates the video as excellent, with strong stabilization across all cameras. If you film your kids or your travels, this is why you'd buy an iPhone.

Stills are less convincing. The main camera shoots 24 MP by default, and GSMArena finds limited dynamic range in daylight, with crushed shadows and clipped highlights. I wouldn't have guessed that from a 48 MP sensor on a $929 phone. It does bug me. There's a 48 MP ultrawide and an 18 MP selfie camera too.

Heat

GSMArena says it gets hot and throttles under sustained load. Long gaming sessions aren't what I'd buy this for. If that's your main use, I'd look elsewhere before paying $929.

Spend less, spend more

Here's how I'd think about Apple's own range, using list prices as of November 1, 2026:

  • iPhone 17e, $699: 15.5 h in GSMArena's active-use score, no ultrawide, a 60 Hz screen and thick bezels.
  • iPhone 17, $929: about 15 h in the same score. The one reviewed here.
  • iPhone Air, $1,099: thinner. I don't have a matching battery score for it.
  • iPhone 18 Pro, $1,199: 16.7 h in the same score, with a 4x periscope telephoto, at 211 g.

The $230 gap to the 17e buys you a 120 Hz screen and a second rear camera. I'd pay it. If you never open the ultrawide and don't notice refresh rates, keep the $230, because the 17e's 15.5 hours in the same test is no worse.

The $270 jump to the 18 Pro gets you the zoom lens that started this review. GSMArena says it's somewhat heavy, and 34 g extra is noticeable on paper at least. I'd only pay if you want the zoom.

The Android question

The obvious rival is the Pixel 11, at $899 list. It has a 5x telephoto and seven years of updates against the roughly five GSMArena expects for iPhones, which isn't an Apple promise. The iPhone is 20 g lighter and has the faster chip. Anyone not already tied to iOS should read my Pixel 11 vs iPhone 17 comparison before paying.

Skip it if

  • You want optical zoom.
  • You play long gaming sessions.
  • You'd rather not use iOS.

I own up to one bias: I like a light phone, and 177 g with IP68 rated for 6 m over 30 minutes and Wi-Fi 7 is a combination I'd pay $929 for.
